Two very different educational paradigms

I just re-read a fantastic book by Thomas Armstrong, The Best Schools, published by ASCD. I love how he differentiates between what he calls "Academic Achievement Discourse" and "Human Development Discourse". The former refers to the predominant obsolete content-based paradigm; the latter refers to an alternative approach based on "the developing needs, interests, and abilities of the students." Mr. Armstrong goes on and elaborates on the 8 assumptions underlying each one of these two paradigms.
This is a book that has the potencial to radically change the professional life of any educator who reads it.
In the upcoming weeks we will comment on the characteristics of each one of these two paradigms brilliantly described in this short and frankly pleasant book.
